Allied Health Assistants work directly with clients to implement allied health programs.
They may work under the supervision of physiotherapists, dieticians, podiatrists, speech
therapists or occupational therapists.

Entry Criteria
This is an open entry program of study. Participants need to be able to read, write and
communicate in English to a level required to do the job.
Training Program
Including all pre-requisite and co-requisite units. This qualification includes the mandatory
elective skill set in Physiotherapy and the mandatory elective skill set in
Occupational
Therapy, in addition to providing an
introduction to speech pathology.

- Implement and monitor compliance with legal and ethical requirements (HLTHIR506B)
- Contribute to OHS processes (HLTOHS300A)
- Implement and monitor infection control policy and procedures (HLTIN403B)
Selected Electives Allied Health - Physiotherapy
- Assist with physiotherapy treatments and interventions (HLTAH402A)
- Deliver and monitor a client-specific exercise program (HLTAH401A)
- Deliver and monitor exercise program for mobility (HLTAH403A)
Selected Electives Allied Health - Occupational Therapy
- Support the fitting of assistive devices (HLTAH414A)
- Assist with development and maintenance of client functional status (HLTAH408A)
- Assist with the rehabilitation of clients (HLTAH407A)
- Conduct group sessions for individual client outcomes (HLTAH409A)
Other Selected Electives
- Respond effectively to difficult or challenging behaviour (HLTCSD306B)

Course Benefits
On completion, participants will be able to:
- Provide assistance to allied health professionals as directed in order to meet
patient/client needs and deliver therapy programs relevant to that profession
- Apply specialised knowledge and skills required for the delivery of therapy programs
to both individuals and groups across a variety of settings
- Demonstrate an understanding of the relationships between organisations responsible for
the delivery of health care services
- Develop effective workplace relationships and contribute to work group activities
- Communicate clearly with staff and clients
- Explain the key issues facing clients and their carers in the community
- Comply with occupational health and safety and infection control policies and procedures
Delivery
- 28 days at Mayfield from 9.00am to 5.00pm
- 480 hours of structured off-site learning in your own time and place
- 180 hours of clinical experience arranged with assistance from Mayfield

Assessment
Students are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study. There
are continuous assessment tasks throughout the course which have been designed to
consolidate core knowledge and skills prior to final assessment. Tasks include practical
exercises, written tests and completion of learning workbooks. Final competency assessment
occurs in the workplace.
Award
Nationally Recognised Certificate (including the mandatory elective skills sets in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy).
Learning Pathway
Additional units may be undertaken to complete the requirements for speech pathology
assisting or podiatry assisting. Some credit may be granted towards tertiary studies in an
Allied Health field.
Fee
$3,140 per person. plus $100 materials fee
