Professional Development Day (Allied Health Assistants)

Mayfield Education has been delivering quality training courses for AHA's for over 30 years. Mayfield is delivering an exciting new series of professional development sessions that have been specifically tailored for Allied Health Assistants in the workforce. The topics will focus on developing skills and knowledge catering to AHA's working in a wide range of settings.

Session One: Parkinsons Disease
An interactive and informative session to assist in the understanding of this commonly seen disease. As an AHA how can we provide best care to this patient group?

Presenter
Margarita Makoutonina, B. Health Sci. Occ.Th.

Margarita Makoutonina is the Senior Clinician, Occupational Therapist in the Victorian Comprehensive Parkinson Program (VCPP), National Centre of Excellence in Melbourne. She has held this position for over 10 years. She is an experienced Educator with a Masters of Education (Honors) She has used her Occupational Therapist research and education, knowledge and experience to assist with the development and utilisation of a specific rehabilitation program for people with Parkinson's Disease.

Her achievements include:

  • Delivered her research papers at many international Congresses
  • Developed and conducted lectures, workshops and specialist training in Parkinson’s at overseas clinics
  • Published an article and contributed to manuscripts of 2 books in the field of Parkinson’s

Session Two: Acquired Brain Injury

This is an opportunity for AHAs to develop further knowledge about the treatment of patients with Acquired Brain Injury. A practical component builds skills in assisting with a range of exercise interventions used in a contemporary specialised neurological physiotherapy setting.

Sue Vincent B.App.Sc (Physio), Grad Dip Ex For Rehab

Sue is a Physiotherapist and leads the team at Neurological Rehabilitation Group, a neurological physiotherapy private practice. She has many years of experience as a leader in her area of specialty. An experienced educator , she is passionate about her work and is keen to see AHAs further develop their skills and knowledge in the area of Neurological Rehabilitation. Sue is a member of the APA neurology group. Her interests include enabling physiotherapy practices to deliver excellent services, and representing the physiotherapy profession through her membership as a councillor on the Victorian Branch Council of the APA.

Learning Outcomes

Parkinsons Disease
On completion, participants should be able to:
• outline major changes in the therapeutic treatment of motor disorders in patients with Parkinsons' Disease
• identify best practice principles in delivering health care to patients with Parkinsons' Disease
• understand the components of a comprehensive treatment strategy from a rehabilitation perspective
• understand the role of the Allied Health Assistant in delivering and evaluating care in the patient group

Acquired Brain Injury
On completion, participants should be able to:
• outline major mechanisms of ABI and contemporary demographical trends
• identify best practice principles in delivering health care to patients with ABI
• understand the components of a comprehensive treatment strategy from a Physiotherapy perspective
• perform and instruct a range of therapeutic exercises beneficial for this patient group

Delivery
Session One: Half day course at Mayfield from 9.00am to 12.00pm.

Session Two: Half day course at Mayfield from 1.00pm to 4.00pm.

Mayfield Certificate of Attendance

Fee
$120 per person per each three hour session. A light lunch will be provided for participants who attend both sessions.

Three weeks prior to course commencement. Late applications considered.
