This course is designed to develop skills and a detailed knowledge of the areas of
cardiac technology relevant to the cardiac technician. It provides an opportunity to develop a strong theoretical background in essential areas of cardiac technology and practice newly gained proficiency under skilled supervision.

Entry Criteria
- VCE or equivalent standard of education
- Opportunities for relevant on-the-job training
- The ability to read, write and communicate in English to a level required to perform
the job
Training Program
14 units - 10 compulsory and 4 pre-selected electives. All units must be successfully
completed to receive the award.
Compulsory Units
- Communicate and work effectively in health (HLTHIR301A)
- Contribute to OHS processes (HLTOHS300A)
- Perform electrocardiography (ECG) (HLTCA401B)
- Perform holter monitoring (HLTCA402B)
- Perform stress testing (HLTCA403B)
- Perform basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation in a cardiac testing environment (HLTCA404B)
- Confirm physical health status (HLTAP401A)
- Comply with infection control policies and procedures in health work (HLTIN301A)
- Use specific health terminology to communicate effectively (HLTCOM408B)
- Apply first aid (HLTFA301B)
Elective Units

Assessment
Students are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study. One two hour written examination, completion of theory workbooks, clinical record and a competency based procedure book covering supervised workplace training. A pass is required in all assessments for successful completion of the course.
Learning Pathway
This Certificate leads to the Certificate in Advanced Cardiac Technology which covers the more in-depth knowledge and skills required of the advanced cardiac technician.
