| Criteria for Course Places |

All student selection for entry into courses is undertaken by the Course Coordinator,
the Director of Education and other Mayfield Education staff as deemed appropriate.
This constitutes the Selection Committee.
It is essential that all questions on the application form are answered adequately so we
can make an informed decision. Demand for places may exceed the amount of places available.
Selection Criteria for course positions include:
- Date application received
- Application fully completed
- Course entry requirements are met
- Amount of experience in the work area addressed by the course
- Type of training previously undertaken
- Courses completed
- Ability to use and apply the course learning
- Reasons given for applying for a course position

Advanced Sterilisation
3 day short course - 27-29 May 2009
For senior sterilising technicians and sterilising managers, this course considers, detergents and soil testing requirements, structure of steam sterilisers, impact of steam quality on sterilisation, terminology used to descrie validation procedures and concepts and principles involved in process validation.

Aged Care Funding Instrument
1 day short course - 10 June and 4 August 2009
The ACFI is the new Aged Care Funding Instrument introduced in March 2008 for determining the level of care payments
for residents in aged care homes. Along with the new funding instrument, new categories of fuding were also introduced. The new method was designed to better match the needs of people with dementia and those with complex health care needs.
This short course is designed to enable the health care professional to better understand the model and instrument and
therefore derive greater benefit from care payments that are more closely aligned with residents care needs.

Allied Health - Certificate IV in HLT42507
Commencing 26 February and 13 August, 2009
Allied Health Assistants work directly with clients to implement allied health programs.
They may work under the supervision of physiotherapists, dieticians, podiatrists,
speech therapists and occupational therapists.

Allied Health - Certificate IV Transition Program
Commencing 15 May and 23 October, 2009
This course is for Allied Health Assistants who hold the Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance (HLT31702 or HLT32407) who
wish to further develop their skills by gaining the Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance HLT42507. These people may be eligible for a combination of exemptions, recognition of prior learning and recognition of current competency that fast tracks their completion of the Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance.

Applied Medical Terminology Course

Advanced Cardiac Technology - Certificate in
Commencing 10 February 2009
This training covers the more in depth knowledge and skills required of the
advanced cardiac technologist and builds on the knowledge acquired in Year 1
(Certificate IV in Cardiac Technology).

Commencing 3 February 2009
This training is designed to develop skills required and a detailed knowledge of the areas of cardiac technology relevant to the cardiac technician. Caring for the Feet of Elderly and People with a Disability
1 day short course - 20 March, 2009,

Problems with the feet may be the first signs of medical conditions such as arthritis,
diabetes and nerve and circulatory disorders. Elderly and people with a disability may require
assistance from health professionals and carers in foot care in order to maintain good
function and prevent foot problems. This course teaches you safe and appropriate foot
care techniques aimed at maintaining healthy foot function in elderly and disabled
people. You will learn to identify high risk situations requiring referral to specialist
podiatrists. Practical supervised experience in toe nail cutting and redistributive
padding is part of this program.

Continence Management Strategies
3 day short course - 15-17 June, and 5-7 October 2009
Incontinence is a common condition affecting over 2 million Australians, and often the
cause for admission of older people into emergency departments and residential care.
Management of urinary and faecal incontinence requires systematic problem solving and this
program promotes the assessment, prevention and implementation of strategies to improve
continence.

Developing Policies, Procedures and Audit Tools in
Health Care
2 day short course - 22-23 June 2009
Health staff are frequently required to develop policies and procedures to ensure the
required level of service delivery or care is provided. In addition, improvements in
health care delivery are a requirement of accreditation. This program guides the
participant in developing evidence based policies and procedures. This course also
builds skills in developing tools that can be used to conduct internal audits.

Food Safety Supervisors Course

The 1984 Food Act was amended in 2001 to require all businesses, including health facilities, to have a formally
trained Food Safety Supervisor to oversee the implementation and monitoring of the organisation's Food Safety Program.

Infection Control in Long Term Care - Certificate in
Commencing 2 February, 2009
Research on infection rates in long term care facilities has identified that infections
can have a significant effect on the well being of residents and associated health care
delivery costs. Proactive infection prevention and surveillance programs can help
improve care outcomes in long term care facilities.
Long term care facilities are those in which residents with limited self-care abilities
are looked after by a variety of health care workers. Examples of long term care
facilities are nursing homes, group homes for people with physical, intellectual or
psychiatric disabilities, psychiatric hospitals and rehabilitation centres.

Infection Control - Introduction to

The Infection Control Practitioner has responsibility for infection control practices

introduction to the issues which confront the present day Infection Control
Practitioner. Many aspects of infection control covered in the course are applicable

The Role and Function of the division 2 Registered Nurse

Sterilisation and Disinfection Practice for
Environmental Health Officers

This program helps Environmental Health Officers understand Australian Standard AS/NZS
4815 and how it should be applied to skin penetration establishments. After completing
the one day course you will understand infection control principles and the need for
compliance to minimise the risk of infection. The course has a strong focus on how

Stomal Therapy Nursing - Certificate in
Commencing 16 February, 2009
The revised course has been endorsed by the Australian Association of Stomal Therapy Nursing.
The Stomal Therapy Nurse (STN) has been described by the AASTN (N. Polmear), as one who
works "in a clinically advanced practice role. They develop, implement and evaluate
strategies for the support, care, education and rehabilitation of anyone anticipating
surgery resulting in temporary or permanent faecal or urinary diversion. They provide
clinical assessments and therapeutic management for specified health and illness
presentations."
