Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education and Health Care (V12936)
Every day in Australia, 275 people develop diabetes*. Poorly managed, diabetes can contribute to cardiac disease, kidney failure, visual disturbance and other complications. Diabetes Educators work with people with diabetes to assist them to understand and manage their disease effectively. This postgraduate course enables you to develop higher level skills and expertise in diabetes management. Whatever your practice setting or location, you as a diabetes educator are charged with the responsibility to work towards improving health outcomes for your clients.

Entry Criteria
• Registered Nurses (Division 1 in Victoria), minimum of 12 months post-completion of graduate year
• Accredited Practicing Dietitians having completed a DAA accredited tertiary course, minimum of 12 months post-completion
• Registered Podiatrists (with Podiatrists Registration Board [of Victoria]), minimum of 12 months post-completion
• Registered Pharmacists (must be accredited to conduct medication management reviews by AALP or SHPA, together with significant industry experience and minimum of 12 months post-completion of above accreditation; may be granted entry dependent upon the individual experience of applicants.

• Foot care in diabetes
• Macrovascular and microvascular complications of diabetes
• Management of hyperglycaemic emergencies
• Diabetes management in the elderly
• Diabetes care for children and adolescents
• Diabetes care in pregnancy
• Caring for people with diabetes from indigenous and multicultural communities
• Program development and delivery in diabetes education settings
• Primary health care
• Management issues in a diabetes context
• Practice issues for the diabetes education profession
Course Benefits
On completion, participants are able to:
• Use current evidence to provide quality diabetes education in any setting
• Maintain a focus on community education and health promotion while providing diabetes education to individuals, groups and other health professionals
• Plan, conduct and evaluate diabetes education programs
• Provide optimal, effective clinical care within their foundation scope of practice
• Effectively network with other health professionals to provide comprehensive, coordinated and client centred care
• Manage self, staff and resources with a diabetes education service
• Participate in ongoing professional development and maintain professional accountability for own practice
Delivery
• 25 days at Mayfield Education (5 x one week study blocks)
• Approximately 451 hours of self-directed learning
• Minimum of 60 hours clinical experience (arranged by Mayfield Education)
Clinical supervision during the placement will be provided by ADEA credentialed diabetes educators

Intake 1: Commencing 1 March 2010
Study block dates: 1-5 March; 3-7 May; 21-25 June; 2-6 August; 22-26 November
Intake 2: Commencing 12 July 2010
Study block dates: 12-16 July; 6-10 September; 25-30 October; 2 weeks in February and April 2011
Assessment
Exams, academic assignments, class presentation, personal journal, class attendance and clinical placement competency.

Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) Accredited Course
Tertiary Articulation
This program articulates into the Graduate Diploma of Advanced Nursing at La Trobe University. Course runs over two semesters, taking approximately 10 months in total.
