Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education and Health Care V12936
Every day in Australia 275 people develop diabetes*. Poorly managed, diabetes can contribute to cardiac disease, kidney failure, visual disturbance and other complications. Diabetes Educators work with people with diabetes to assist them to understand and manage their disease effectively. This postgraduate course enables you to develop higher level skills and expertise in diabetes maangement. Whatever your practice setting or location, you as a diabetes educator are charged with the reponsiblity to work towards improving health outcomes for your clients.

Entry Criteria
  • Registered Nurses (Division 1 in Victoria), minimum of 12 months post-completion of graduate year
  • Accredited Practicing Dietitians having completed a DAA accredited tertiary course, minimum of 12 months post-completion
  • Registered Podiatrists (with Podiatrists Registration Board [of Victoria]), minimum of 12 months post-completion
  • Registered Pharmacists (must be accredited to conduct medication management reviews by AALP or SHPA, together with significant industry experience and minimum of 12 months post-completion of above accreditation; may be granted entry dependent upon the individual experience of applicants.

  • Diabetes management in the elderly
  • Diabetes care for children and adolescents
  • Diabetes care in pregnancy
  • Caring for people with diabetes from indigenous and multicultural communities
  • Program development and delivery in diabetes education settings
  • Primary health care
  • Management issues in diabetes context
  • Practical issues for the diabetes education profession
Assessment

Successful outcomes in all assessment tasks is required.
Assessment tasks include examinations, academic assignments, class presentation, personal journal, class attendance and clinical placement competency.

Delivery
  • 25 days at Mayfield Education (5 one week study blocks)
  • Approximately 451 hours learning in your own time
  • Mminimum 60 hours clincial experience arranged by Mayfield Education
Clinical supervision during the placement will be provided by ADEA credentialed diabetes educators.

Intake 1: Commencing 2 March 2009

2-6 March; 4-8 May; 15-19 June; 3-7 August; 5-9 October 2009

Intake 2: Commencing 13 July 2009

13-17 July; 7-11 September; 26-30 October 2009. Plus 2 weeks in 2010.

Assessment

Exams, academic assignments, class presentation, personal journal, class attendance and clinical placement competency

Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) Accredited Course

Tertiary Accreditation

This program articulates into the Graduate Diploma of Advanced Nursing at La Trobe University. Course runs over two semesters, taking approximately 10 months in total.
