Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education and Health Care (V12936)
This post graduate course is undergoing dynamic changes for 2011.
A blend of on-campus learning, practical workshops and interactive online education will enable the health care professional to develop the skills and expertise in diabetes management. Diabetes is a complex disease process that can contribute to cardiac disease, renal failure, visual impairment and microvascular complications.
Diabetes is an epidemic with 275 Australians per day being diagnosed with the disease*. Diabetes Educators work with people with diabetes to assist them to self manage their chronic disease effectively.

Entry Criteria
• Registered Nurses with a minimum of 12 months post-completion
• Accredited Practicing Dietitians with a minimum of 12 months post-completion
• Registered Podiatrists with a minimum of 12 months post-completion
• Registered Pharmacists (must be accredited to conduct medication management reviews by Australian Association of Consultant Pharmacy or Society of Hospital Pharmacists Australia) with a minimum of 12 months post-completion

• Pathophysiology of diabetes
• Epidemiology of diabetes
• Nutrition and the person with diabetes
• Exercise and diabetes
• Pharmacological treatments for diabetes
• Foot care in diabetes
• Macrovascular and microvascular complications of diabetes
• Management of hyperglycaemic emergencies
• Diabetes management in the elderly
• Diabetes care for children and adolescents
• Diabetes care in pregnancy
• Caring for people with diabetes from indigenous and multicultural communities
• Program development and delivery in diabetes education settings
• Primary health care
• Management issues in a diabetes context
• Practice issues for the diabetes education profession

Delivery Model
• 15 days at Mayfield Education (3 x one week study blocks)
• Self-directed learning
• Interactive online education
• 60 hours clinical experience (arranged by Mayfield Education)
• 1 day practical workshop

Assessment
Exam, academic assignments, class presentation, Professional Development journal, practical and scenario assessment, class attendance and clinical placement competency.
