Course Content
• The role and function of a sterilising technician
• The sterilising services environment
• Overview of the requirements of AS/NZS 4187
• Basic microbiology and infection transmission
• Standard precautions
• Cleaning reusable medical devices
• Preparation for sterilisation
• Principles of steam sterilisation
• Monitoring of steam sterilisation
• Sterile stock storage and handling
Course Benefits
On completion participants should be able to:
• Practice standard precautions
• Minimise the risk of infection transmission in a sterilising services environment
• Apply basic cleaning procedures to cleaning reusable medical devices
• Outline the process involved in preparing items and loads for steam sterilisation
• Describe the principles of steam sterilisation
• Discuss the main methods of monitoring a steam sterilisation process
• Store and handle sterile stock in order to maintain sterility of items
