This course equips participants with the skills and
knowledge required to administer
medications within the scope of practice of the Registered Nurse (Division 2) in
Australia.

Entry Criteria
- All participants must hold current registration as a Registered Nurse (Division 2)
- Successful VETASSESS Nursing test (literacy and numeracy)
- Nurses initially registered prior to2003 need to complete a Mayfield
structured anatomy and physiology self learning package, and undertake an anatomy and physiology exam

- Administer and Monitor Medications in the Work Environment (HLTEN507A)
- Analyse Health Information (HLTAP501A)
Content
- Extended scope of practice for Division 2 Nurses incorporating enteral, topical, sub-cutaneous, intra-muscular and IV regulation
- Principles of drug metabolism and action
- Indications and contraindications for drug usage
- Client assessment and evaluation of drug reactions
- Managing adverse reactions
- Methods of drug administration
- Safe handling and storage of drugs
- Legal and ethical issues related to medication administration
- Role of medications in health and illness
- Client education
- Client assessment
Training Benefits
On completion participants should be able to:
- Explain the role of medication in health and illness
- Explain the role of the Division 2 Nurse in the administration of medication
- Outline the legal and medical issues related to medication administration
- Explain principles of pharmaceuticals and drug actions
- Explain principles of pharmacokinetics
- Identify potential risk factors in different health patterns
- Assess clients prior to and following administration of prescribed medication
- Perform calculations accurately prior to the administration of medication
- Administer prescribed medication to clients
- Undertake client education related to management of prescribed medication
Delivery
- 134 hours of theory (classroom based and self directed learning)
- 76 hours of supervised practical work.
Clinical placements commence after successfully completing the theory exam component of the
course (10 days)

Assessment
Students are assessed against specific performance crieria for each unit of study. Workbook, clinical experience and written examinations.
