Certificate IV Operating Theatre Technical Support (HLT42007)

This course is designed to develop leadership and training skills in senior operating room technicians who provide a range of assistance functions to operating room personnel. This course will enhance your ability to facilitate a cooperative team. This course will also deepen your knowledge base and skills in monitoring policy and procedures in the operating suite relevant to your role.

Entry Criteria
• Current employment in a senior position in an operating suite (preferably Grade 3 in Victoria)
• Opportunities for on the job training with the support of their workplace
• Applicants need oral and written communication skills in English and numeracy skills, to a level required to perform the job.

Pre-requisite Units:
The following competency units are pre-requisites for this qualification:
• Provide theatre support services (HLTTH3001C)
• Provide equipment support in an acute care environment (HLTTH302C)
• Identify and move to maintain a sterile field (HLTTH303C)
• Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately (BSBMED301B)

(Please note: Students will not proceed with the course until the pre-requisites are completed. Students will receive self-directed learning packages for the units of study as well as assignments for each of the pre-requisite units.)

Co-requisite Units if not previously completed:
• HLTIN301B
• HLTAP401A
(Please note that these units of study will be completed within the course itself)

Training Program
15 competency units: 8 compulsory units and 7 pre-selected electives

Compulsory units
• Contribute to organisational effectiveness in the health industry (HLTHIR402C)
• Implement and monitor compliance with legal and ethical requirements (HLTHIR506C)
• Contribute to OHS processes (HLTOHS300B)
• Implement and monitor infection control policy and procedures (HLTIN403C)
• Provide routine care and handling of equipment within the operating suite (HLTTH404C)
• Assist with preparation of clients for operative procedures (HLTTH405C)
• Provide intra-operative equipment and technical support (HLTTH406C)
• Handle medical gases safely (HLTMS207C)


Selected Electives
• Undertake routine stock maintenance (HLTMS203C)
• Handle waste in a health care environment (HLTMS208C)
• Implement continuous improvement (BSBMGT403A)
• Provide mentoring support to colleagues (ORG627B)
• Follow safe manual handling practices (HLTHSE204C)
• Clean reusable medical equipment (HLTSTE301C)
• Facilitate individual learning (TAADEL403A)

Delivery
This course is designed to be undertaken by distance education over a minimum of 8 months.

Assessment
Students are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study. Workplace competency assessment, portfolio, assignments, short essays and tests as well as on-line activities.

Award
Nationally Recognised Certificate

Learning Pathway
After successfully completing this course, experienced technicians may wish to enrol in:
• Diploma of Management
• Diploma of Paramedical Science (Anaesthesia)

A Funded fee is available through Skills Victoria.
$1,670.90

Full Fee: $4,949
