This course is designed to develop leadership and
training skills in senior operating
room technicians who provide a range of assistance functions to operating room personnel.
This course will enhance your ability to facilitate a cooperative team. This course will
also deepen your knowledge base and skills in monitoring policy and procedures in the
operating suite relevant to your role.

Entry Criteria
- Current employment in a senior position in an operating suite (preferably grade 3 in
Victoria)
- Opportunities for on the job training with the support of their workplace
- Applicants need oral and written communication skills in English and numeracy skills
- Pre-requisite Units of Competency as follows:
- Provide theatre support services (HLTTH301B)
- Provide equipment support in an acute care environment (HLTTH302B)
- Identify and move to maintain a sterile field (HLTTH303B)
- Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately (BSBMED301B)
Training Program
15 competency units: 8 compulsory units and 7 preselected electives
Compulsory Units
- Contribute to organisational effectiveness in the health industry (HLTHIR402B)
- Implement and monitor compliance with legal and ethical requirements (HLTHIR506B)
- Contribute to OHS processes (HLTOHS300A)
- Implement and monitor infection control policy and procedures (HLTIN403B). (The unit HLTIN301A will be included within HLTIN403B if not previously studied)
- Provide routine care and handling of equipment within the operating suite (HLTTH404B)
- Assist with preparation of clients for operative procedures (HLTTH405B). (The unit HLTAP401A will be included within HLTTH405B if not previously studied)
- Provide intra-operative equipment and technical support (HLTTH406B)
- Handle medical gases safely (HLTMS207B)
Elective Units
- Follow safe manual handling practices (HLTHSE204B)
- Undertake routine stock maintenance (HLTMS203B)
- Handle waste in a health care environment (HLTMS208B)
- Clean reusable medical equipment (HLTSTE301B)
- Implement continuous improvement (BSBMGT403A)
- Provide mentoring support to colleagues (CHCORG27A)
- Facilitate individual learning (TAADEL403A)
Delivery
This course is designed to be undertaken by distance education over a minimum of 7 months.
Dates
As this course is undertaken by distance education commencement can occur at any time.
Assessment
Students are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study. Workplace competency assessment, portfolio, assignments, short essays and tests.

- Diploma of Paramedical Science (Anaesthesia)
