Certificate IV Operating Theatre Technical Support (HLT42007)
Entry Criteria
• Current employment in a senior position in an operating suite (preferably Grade 3 in Victoria)
• Opportunities for on the job training with the support of their workplace
• Applicants need oral and written communication skills in English and numeracy skills, to a level required to perform the job.
Pre-requisite Units:
The following competency units are pre-requisites for this qualification:
• Provide theatre support services (HLTTH301B)
• Provide equipment support in an acute care environment (HLTTH302B)
• Identify and move to maintain a sterile field (HLTTH303B)
• Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately (BSBMED301B)
(Please note: Students will not proceed with the course until the pre-requisites are completed. Students will receive self-directed learning packages for the units of study as well as assignments for each of the pre-requisite units.)
Co-requisite Units if not previously completed:
• HLTIN301A
• HLTAP401A
(Please note that these units of study will be completed within the course itself)
Training Program

• Implement and monitor infection control policy and procedures (HLTIN403B)
• Provide routine care and handling of equipment within the operating suite (HLTTH404B)
• Assist with preparation of clients for operative procedures (HLTTH405B) Provide intra-operative equipment and technical support (HLTTH406B)
• Handle medical gases safely (HLTMS207B)

• Follow safe manual handling practices (HLTHSE204B)
• Undertake routine stock maintenance (HLTMS203B)
• Handle waste in a health care environment (HLTMS208B)

Delivery
This course is designed to be undertaken by distance education over a minimum of 8 months.
On-line sessions are conducted on the first Monday of each month between 2.00 – 4.00 pm Eastern Standard Time

Assessment
Students are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study. Workplace competency assessment, portfolio, assignments, short essays and tests as well as on-line activities.
