Certificate III in Health Services Assistance - Operating Theatre Technician Work HLT32507
This training prepares the person to take on the position of an Operating Theatre Technician (OTT), and become a competent and reliable member of the health care team. The OTT works under the guidance and supervision of nursing, anaesthetic and surgical staff enabling the participant to develop both their technical and interpersonal skills.

Entry Criteria

Ability to read, write and communicate in English

Training Program

15 competency units are required for award of this qualification including 10 compulsory units and 5 elective units:

Compulsory Units
  • Communicate and work effectively in health (HLTHIR301A)
  • Comply with infection control policies and procedures in health work (HLTIN301A)
  • Participate in OHS processes (HLTOHS200A)
  • Contribute to effective workplace relationships (BSBFLM303B)
  • Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately (BSBMED301B)
  • Recognise healthy body systems in a health care context (HLTAP301A)
  • Provide theatre support services (HLTTH301B)
  • Provide equipment support in an acute care environment (HLTTH302B)
  • Identify and move to maintain a sterile field (HLTTH303B)
  • Assist with preparation of clients for operative procedures (HLTTH405B) (To complete this unit you will simultaneously, have to undertake HLTAP401A, Confirm physical health status)
Selected Electives
  • Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers (HLTHIR403B)

Delivery

Because of the specific needs of students the course is offered in numerous ways:

For those not currently working in the field

The course for convenience sake is divided into Section A and Section B.

Section A

Within Section A the student is required to undertake five consecutive days in the classroom, two full days in an operating theatre suite and three evenings of tutorials between 5.00-8.00pm at a major hospital. The rest of the course is delivered by distance education allowing the student to keep working in their current employment.

Section B

After successful completion of Section A, students may apply to complete the qualification by enrolling into Section B. To have the application approved, students must have secured a position in a hospital theatre as an unqualified Operaring Theatre Technician (OTT). Once this is accomplished, the course is offered by distance education. Section B may commence at any time.

This Section is available as a Fee for Service Traineeship.

For those currently working in the field

For those currently working as an unqualified OTT, the student may take up the course through distance education. The student may commence the course at any time.

This course is avaialble as a Full or Fee for Service Traineeship.

For those wishing to upgrade their qualification

Those wishing to upgrade their qualification to the HLT32507 level may do so through application of Credit Exemption and RPL application. Once the application has been processed, a course of study will be established for the individual student. All study would be by distance education.

  • Classroom dates - 9-13 February 2009 between 9.00am and 4.30pm each day
  • Hospital dates - 16-17 February 2009 ususally between 7.00am and 3.30pm
  • Tutorial dates - 25 February 4, 11 March 2009 between 5.00 and 8.00pm
Intake 2: Commencing 14 September 2009
  • Classroom dates - 14-18 September 2009 between 9.00am and 4.30pm each day
  • Hospital dates - 21-22 September 2009 ususally between 7.00am and 3.30pm
  • Tutorial dates - 30 September, 7, 14 October 2009 between 5.00 and 8.00pm
Assessment

Students are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study. Short answer written assignments, tests, and workplace competency assessments.

Statement of Results on completion of Section A
Nationally Recognised Certificate on completion of Sections A and B

Fee

Section A: $1,925 per person.
Section B: $1,645 per person
Full Fee: $3,570 per person
