Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (Operating Theatre Technician Work), (HLT32507) - Accelerated Course

This training prepares the person to take on the position of an Operating Theatre Technician (OTT), and become a competent and reliable member of the health care team. The OTT works under the guidance and supervision of nursing, anaesthetic and surgical staff enabling the participant to develop both their technical and interpersonal skills.
Designed For
This course is designed for those students who wish to accelerate their learning and complete the course within a six (6) month period. This course is new and challenging.

Entry Criteria
  • All students will be required to undertake an information session followed by a formal literacy and numeracy test on Monday 19 April 2010 at 0900 hours. (Please see link for a sample test.)

  • Successful students will be interviewed by a panel of people, representatives from Mayfield Education and the participating hospitals on 22 April 2010.
  • All successful applicants will need to present evidence of a police check prior to acceptance into the course (please note, this may take up to 8 weeks)
Please note, those who have previously undertaken study in a HLT32507 program will not be eligible to apply for this course.

Training Program
15 competency units are required for award of this qualification including 10 compulsory units and 5 elective units:

Compulsory Units
  • Communicate and work effectively in health (HLTHIR301A)
  • Comply with infection control policies and procedures in health work (HLTIN301A)
  • Participate in OHS processes (HLTOHS200A)
  • Contribute to effective workplace relationships (BSBFLM303B)
  • Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately (BSBMED301B)
  • Recognise healthy body systems in a health care context (HLTAP301A)
  • Provide theatre support services (HLTTH301B)
  • Provide equipment support in an acute care environment (HLTTH302B)
  • Identify and move to maintain a sterile field (HLTTH303B)
  • Assist with preparation of clients for operative procedures (HLTTH405B) (To complete this unit you will simultaneously, have to undertake HLTAP401A, Confirm physical health status)
Selected Electives
  • Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers (HLTHIR403B)
  • Contribute to team effectiveness (BSBFLM312A)
  • Transport clients (HLTCSD208B)
  • Perform CPR (HLTCPR201A)
  • Identify and move to maintain a sterile field (HLTTH303B)
Delivery
This course involves attendance at:

  • 17 days in the classroom over a four (4) month period, punctuated by
  • 6 clinical days, two each month
  • 8 weeks in an Operating Theatre Department on a minimum of two (2) days per week basis (or as negotiated with the hospital)

Dates
Intake 1: Commencing 7 June, 2010

  • Classroom dates - 7-18 June; 12, 19, 26 July; 9, 16, 23 August; 13, 20 September, 2010
  • Clinical dates - 5-6 July; 2-3 August; 6-7 September, 2010

Clinical Placement
The placement period will be for 8 weeks from 4 October to 3 December, 2010. It is anticipated students will work a minimum of 2 days per week to gain the comeptencies required within the program, however, may work more shifts as negotiated with the individual hospital.

All placements will be co-ordinated and designated by Mayfield Education.

Some hospitals may wish to elect to have the students attend as casual staff and will therefore be paid accordingly. Other hospitals will only have students on work experience basis, hence will not receive payment for the clinical placement period.

Assessment
Students are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study including short answer, written assignments, tests, workplace competency assessments and assessment of on-line activities.

$889.50 Victorian State Government Funded Fee (may be available to applicants in 2010)
