Training Program
15 competency units are required for award of this qualification, including 10 compulsory units and 5 elective units
Compulsory Units
• Communicate and work effectively in health (HLTHIR301A)

• Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately (BSBMED301B)
• Recognise healthy body systems in a health care context (HLTAP301A)
• Provide theatre support services (HLTTH301B)
• Provide equipment support in an acute care environment (HLTTH302B)
• Identify and move to maintain a sterile field (HLTTH303B)
• Assist with preparation of clients for operative procedures (HLTTH405B) (To complete this unit you will simultaneously, have to undertake HLTAP401A, Confirm physical health status)

Delivery
Because of the specific needs of students the course is offered via 3 options and takes on average approximately 12 months to complete.
OPTION 1.
For those NOT currently working in the field
The course is divided into Section A and Section B.
Section A
Within Section A the student is required to undertake five consecutive days in the classroom, two full days in an operating theatre suite and three evenings of tutorials between 5.00 - 8.00pm at a major hospital. The rest of the course is delivered by distance education allowing the student to keep working in their current employment.
Section B
After successful completion of Section A, students may apply to complete the qualification by enrolling into Section B. To have the application approved, students must have secured a position in a hospital theatre as an unqualified Operating Theatre Technician (OTT). Once this is accomplished, the course is offered by distance education. Section B may commence at any time.
This Section is available as a Fee for Service Traineeship.
Entry Criteria
• Ability to write speak English to a level commensurate with the course requirements
• Police check must be cited prior to acceptance to the course
Dates
Intake 1: Commencing 8 February, 2010
Classroom Dates: 8-12 February 2010 between
0900 – 1630 hrs
Clinical Dates: either 15 and 16 or 15 and 17 February 2010
Intake 2: Commencing 13 September , 2010
Classroom Dates: 13-17 September 2010 between 0900 – 1630hrs
Clinical Dates: either 20 and 21 or 20 and 22 September 2010
OPTION 2.
For those currently working in the field as unqualified OTTs
For those currently working as an unqualified OTT, the student may take up the course through distance education. The student may commence the course at any time.
This course is available as a Full or Fee for Service Traineeship./p>
Entry Criteria
• Ability to read, write, speak English to a level commensurate with the course requirements
• Have at least 2 months experience as an OTT
• The application form must be signed by the Supervisor
Assessment
Students in either course are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study. Short answer written assignments, tests, and workplace competency assessments.
