Pathology specimen collectors may work independently or as part of a team in laboratories, medical centres, hospitals and other health settings collecting blood and other specimens from patients.

Designed for

Unqualified pathology staff or people interested in obtaining employment in pathology.

Entry Criteria

Participants need oral and written communication skills in English and numeracy to a level required to function effectively.

Training Program

14 units: 9 compulsory units and 5 preselected electives

Compulsory Units
  • Contribute to effective workplace relationships (BSBFLM303C)
  • Communicate and work effectively in health (HLTHIR301A)
  • Contribute to OHS processes (HLTOHS300A)
  • Comply with infection control policies and procedures in health work (HLTIN301A)
  • Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately (BSBMED301A)
  • Apply first aid (HLTFA301B)
  • Operate efficiently within a pathology and specimen collection environment (HLTPAT305B)
  • Perform blood collection (HLTPAT306B)
  • Identify and respond to clinical risks associated with pathology specimen collection (HLTPAT308B)
Selected Electives
  • Collect pathology specimens other than blood (HLTPAT304B)
  • Receive and prepare pathology specimens (HLTPAT301B)
  • Deliver a service to customers (BSBCUS201A)
  • Organise personal work priorities and development (BSBWOR301A)

Assessment

Students are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study. Assessment is a combination of practical sessions, assignments, exams and work placement. There will be one written examination and two practical examinations. Demonstrated competency in all units is required to receive the award.
