Certificate in Stomal Therapy Nursing
This course has been endorsed by the Australian Association of Stomal Therapy Nursing.
The Stomal Therapy Nurse (STN) has been described by the AASTN (N. Polmear), as one who works “in a clinically advanced practice role. They develop, implement and evaluate strategies for the support, care, education and rehabilitation of anyone anticipating surgery resulting in temporary or permanent faecal or urinary diversion. They provide clinical assessments and therapeutic management for specific health and illness presentations.”
The course prepares the Division 1 Nurse for the STN role, adopting an active role in stomal therapy, wound management and contemporary management.
Entry Criteria
• Division 1 Registered Nurses currently working in colorectal units or related areas.
• Evidence of current registration must be cited prior to acceptance to course
• Evidence of police check must be cited prior to acceptance to course
• Pre-requisite: pre-course reading in anatomy and physiology of related areas. (A test will be conducted on the first day of the course.)
Course Content
Unit 1: Stomal Therapy
• The role of the stomal therapy nurse
• Anatomy and pathophysiology relating to stomal therapy
• Conditions requiring stomas
• Presentation of clinical pathology
• Diagnostic procedures and investigations
• Re-admission
• Pre-operative management
• Operative procedures
• Post-operative nursing management
• Nursing management of specific stomal conditions
• Specific paediatric stoma considerations
• Specific management of clients requiring special needs
• Psychological aspects of management
• Patient/client and healthcare team education
• Product usage, evaluation and review
Unit 2: Wound Management
• Anatomy and pathophysiology
• Factors affecting wound healing
• Types of altered tissue/skin integrity, wounds and specific interventions
• Review and management processes
• Prevention and nursing management
Unit 3: Contemporary Management
The following four units from the Diploma of Management (BSB51107), are included in the course. This will enable students to gain credits within the Diploma course.

• Manage People Performance (BSBMGT502B)
• Build and sustain an innovative work environment (BSBINN502A)
Unit 4: Practical Application – clinical work Delivery
The course is to be conducted over an academic year, punctuated by three (3) study blocks, various clinical placements and a self-paced, self-directed learning package from the Diploma of Management Course.
Study blocks are delivered on-site at Mayfield between 9.00 am and 4.30 pm each day.
Dates
Commencing: 10 May, 10-14 May, 6-10 September 2010, 22-25 February 2011, Exam 8 March 2011.
Clinical Placements: 4 placements are scheduled within the course:
2 week placement, the venues are designated by Mayfield education
2 short blocks in paediatrics and community
Approx 80 hours within student’s own agency in visiting various dept eg OR, endoscopy unit, clinical presentations etc. Approval from the student’s workplace administration must be confirmed via the application form
Assessment
Students are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study. Case studies, a work-related project, examinations (pre and post course), clinical assessment and various assignments.
