Australian Apprenticeships/Traineeships are the best way to combine training and employment that leads to a nationally recognised qualification. They are available in a variety of certificate levels.
Australian Apprenticeships/Traineeships do not require any entry qualifications. You can be a school-leaver, re-entering the workforce or simply wishing to change careers.
Australian Apprenticeships/Traineeships offer:
- A great way to get a head start in a chosen career
- Paid work and structured training that can be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both
- ‘Competency based’ which means you can complete your training faster if you reach the required skills level
- Recognition of existing skills and prior experience and course credit, potentially reducing formal training time
- A nationally recognised qualification and skills which provide the basis for further education and training over the course of your working life
Traineeships available through Mayfield (dependent on funding allocation announced in 2009)
- Certificate IV in Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing) (HLT43407)
- Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance (HLT42507)
- Certificate IV in Health Supervision (HLT40407)
- Certificate III in Health Service Assistance Operating Theatre Technician Work (HLT32507)
- Certificate III in Sterilisation Services (HLT31107)
- Certificate III in Pathology (HLT32607)
New Commencement Traineeships
New staff who have been employed
less than 3 months full-time or 12 months part-time.
Eligibility
- Employed for a minimum of 15 hours a week (over a 4 week cycle) in the role for which they will be receiving training.
- Have no qualifications higher than a Certificate II or if higher obtained more than 7 years ago and in a different industry. (Generally, people who have degrees are ineligible).
Fee for Service Traineeships
Fee for Service Traineeships are for existing staff who have been employed by an organisation for
more than 3 months full-time or more than 12 months part-time.
Commonwealth Incentive Payments
If a trainee meets the eligibility criteria, the Commonwealth Government pays employer incentives to organisations who support their staff on traineeships. There may be additional incentives associated with trainees in rural areas.

How are these traineeships funded?
The Victorian State Government may pay the cost of training the trainee. This payment is made directly to Mayfield if a trainee meets the eligibility criteria. The Commonwealth Government pays employer incentives to organisations who support their staff on traineeships.
Is there a cost to the trainee?
The Victorian Government requires the trainee to pay $1.37 per hour of training for their tuition. A maximum of $877 is charged within a 12 month period. If the trainee is in receipt of certain government payments then the training will cost no more than $55. (2008 Government fee structure). Note the fee payable is subject to changes in Victorian Government direction.
There may also be separate costs, such as materials, books and uniforms.

Government Subsidised Training Places
Abstudy
Abstudy offers financial support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are undertaking an approved part-time or full-time program of study. This payment is dependent upon factors such as aboriginality, income and assets, whether the person is receiving other government assistance for study etc. For more information contact your local Centrelink Office.
Austudy
Austudy offers financial support to people who are students aged 25 and over; undertaking an approved program of study at an approved institution; are an Australian permanent resident; have lived in Australia for a total of 2 years. The Austudy payment is dependent upon many factors such as income and assets, whether there are dependent children etc. For more information contact your local Centrelink Office.
